Before the first nail is hammered when building a custom home or a home remodeling project, there is a lot to figure out. Brad and Brook came to Carey as first-time home builders. They had ideas for their forever home, but they also needed a team who could help them navigate everything that came with building it.

“We Were New To The Process.”
There are many things about the design-build approach that make building a home such a rewarding experience. First, the process is intentional. We take the time to get to know our clients, understand their lifestyle and family dynamic, and learn what they want their custom home to do for them. We also want to understand the frustrations they may have with their current home so we can design a space that truly works for the way they live.
Second, design-build allows you to plan before construction begins. Every decision, from the overall layout to the smaller details, can be thoughtfully considered before the ground is broken. That planning helps create a clearer path forward and reduces the guesswork that can come with building a home.
And you don’t have to be a seasoned professional to build a new home. That’s part of the value of having a design-build team by your side. The process guides you from the first design conversations through construction and, finally, to welcoming you home.
With the design and construction teams working together under one roof, there’s collaboration happening throughout the entire project. Everyone is working toward the same goal: creating a home that feels right for you and a building experience that feels organized and manageable.
Building a home is a big deal. We think you should get to enjoy the fun parts.
Building & Designing A New Home
Once we wrapped up the discovery phase, we had a clear understanding of what mattered most to these clients. A large home wasn’t necessary for their family of three, and entertaining would typically be kept small and intimate. They gravitate toward a modern farmhouse style with a palette of black, white, gray, sage green, and powder blue, while gold and brass finishes are a no-go. Planning for aging in place was also a priority, along with making sure the kitchen overlooks the pond.
These are just a few of the details that help shape a home around the people who live in it.
With a solid understanding of the clients, their lifestyle, and their priorities, the design team can get to work turning those discoveries into a thoughtful, personalized design. In another blog post, we discuss about Making Your Home Work for You. It’s a designer’s guide to smarter living and a phenomenal resource for anyone considering a custom home or home remodeling project.
Here’s what Brad and Brooke had to say about their experience in the design phase:
“The design team took our ideas and ran with them to make our dream a reality. What impressed us most was their promptness and efficiency.”
First Design Selections Meeting
The first design selections meeting is all about exploring possibilities and finding the direction that feels right for each client.
We present a variety of design choices to get the conversation started, knowing we might not get it exactly right on the first try. Sometimes, that means introducing an idea or finish that feels a little outside a client’s comfort zone. We encourage our clients to keep an open mind, ask questions, and trust us to explain the thought behind each choice. Design is a collaborative process, and honest feedback helps us narrow in on what feels right.
In this case, we’re glad the clients were open to the navy blue. It became a key part of the design direction, proving that sometimes the choices we don’t initially expect can become our favorites.

As we worked through each room, we followed the same process of exploring options, discussing what worked, and refining what didn’t. Each selection helped us better understand the clients’ preferences and brought us one step closer to a cohesive design. But this phase goes beyond choosing colors, finishes, and materials. The floor plan is also being developed around the family’s daily routines, how they use their space, and what matters most to them. Every layout decision and design selection works together to create a home that not only looks beautiful but also feels natural to live in.
Why We Start With Design, Not Construction
Starting with design instead of construction gives you the opportunity to make thoughtful decisions before they become changes on a job site. For Brad and Brooke, that meant creating a custom home around their family’s needs, planning for the future, and working through the details that would make the house feel like theirs. When the floor plan, materials, and selections are developed together, the construction team has a clearer picture of what needs to be built and how each piece fits into the bigger plan.
Collaboration helps reduce guesswork, avoid unnecessary changes, and keep everyone working toward the same goal. At Carey, we believe a well-planned home starts long before construction, with a team that listens, asks the right questions, and helps you feel confident in the decisions you’re making. Because building your forever home should feel exciting, not like you’re figuring it all out as you go.
Brad and Brooke Experience Building A Custom Home:
